Evoking modern sensibilities and precision in an ode to traditional architecture and design, the AKILA LA storefront was informed by travels to Japan. Inspired by Japanese craftsmanship and traditional ryokans, the design incorporates translucent materials, grids and a curved soffit that echoes shoji sliding doors. The original vaulted ceiling remains a focal point, enhanced by a large cross truss that lowers lighting and exposes the structure. Custom-built pendant lights and glass block display units showcase AKILA’s merchandise against walls lined with Douglas fir woodwork from the Pacific Coast. The space is further enriched with metal shelving, a concrete bench and vintage JBL speakers housed in custom casings. Los Angeles, 2024
